Program

The Laurea Magistrale in Atmospheric Science and Technology for Meteorology & Climate (LMAST4MC) is held entirely in English and provides students with advanced concepts, professional training and specific physics and engineering skills, enabling them to address complex issues requiring analysis, development, simulation and application in a wide range of atmospheric science topics.

The inter-university LMAST4MC program foresees the following 2-year schedule and logistics:

  1. LMAST4MC first year is organized in L’Aquila (90 km far from Rome, about 1-hour trip) and students are introduced to atmospheric dynamics, climate modelling and environmental meteorology as well as to several complementary subjects on atmospheric physics.
  2. LMAST4MC second year is organized in Rome and students acquire a basic knowledge related to major areas of fluid mechanics, meteorology, electromagnetics, statistical mechanics as well as complementary subjects on advanced and applied topics.

The mandatory subjects of LMAST4MC are the following (60 credits corresponding to about 600 hours of class lectures, exercises and laboratories):

  1. Fundamentals of fluid mechanics (6 credits)
  2. Foundations of meteorology (9 credits)
  3. Electromagnetics and radar meteorology (6 credits)
  4. Statistical mechanics (6 credits)
  5. Satellite Earth observation (6 credits)
  6. Laboratory of atmospheric remote sensing (6 credits)
  7. Atmospheric dynamics: meteorological and climate modeling (12 credits)
  8. Environmental meteorology (12 credits)

Other 24 credits can be chosen by the student within a wide offer of subjects in LMAST4MC together with a stage of 3 credits (75 hours of student work). A final Master thesis of 24 credits (650 hours of student work), to be presented and discussed, concludes the LMAST4MC program (the final grade is expressed in 110 with possible laude).

The LMAST4MC Master thesis score is up to 10 points (over 110 available) where: i) for requests of points ≥ 6 a reviewer is needed; ii) 2 points are attributed for academic time-efficiency; iii) to obtain cum laude, the overall points should be equal or larger than 113/110.
Each student can compile his/her study plan by following his/her interests.

Legend

  • 1 CFU = 1 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) = 25 hours of student work with 8-9 h. of lectures or 12 h. laboratory/exercise
  • CFU type: B (mandatory), C (complementary/optional), D (free choice selection), E (thesis), F (professional)
  • D-Type subjects can be freely chosen by the student within the LMAST4MC offer or within Sapienza and Univaq overall offer (see below).

The student free-choice subjects can be chosen within:
– the LMAST offer of non-mandatory (C type) subjects;
– the whole MSc didactic offer University of L’Aquila;
– the whole MSc didactic course offer of Sapienza University of Rome.
Note that:
– the free-choice subject should be coherent with the LMAST4MC study plan and must be approved by the LMAST4MC council;
– if the free-choice subject belongs to the Sapienza UniRome, the LMAST4MC student needs to select single courses following this specific procedure and then ask for an automatic recognition to LMAST4MC secretary.

LMAST didactic regulation

LMAST4MC study plan can be presented to the LMAST4MC chair and didactic secretary by each enrolled student. Students may, in accordance with regulations established by individual Departments, present an alternative individual study plan
– between 1 August – 15 September (31 October upon request and approval);
– between 15 January – 15 February only for optional courses of the II semester.
If the deadline of 15 September (or 31 October) is not met, you can present an individual LMAST4MC study plan until 20 December, but you will have to pay a € 52.00 fee.

LMAST4MC current didactic regulation:

LMAST didactic regulation documents are available here for past academic year:
a.y. 2020-21  LMAST4MC Regulation and Program
a.y. 2019-20  LMAST4MC Regulation and Program
a.y. 2018-19  LMAST4MC Regulation and Program

Minutes of LMAST4MC CAD (didactic area council) meetings are available upon request from the LMAST chair.

LMAST student access (e-mail, wifi, card)

LMAST4MC students are administratively enrolled at Univaq, but they are inter-university students and can exploit the benefits/services of both Univaq and Sapienza.

Univaq offers to LMAST4MC students the possibility to register at the Univaq virtual secretary and obtain access to exam booking and registration as well as to other services, such as:
– Univaq registration number;
– Univaq e-mail and wifi access;
– Univaq student card for accessing to cafeterias and libraries.
See also the Univaq student website here for more information.

After pre-enrolling at Univaq, Sapienza offers to LMAST4MC inter-university students a registration website, called Infostud, where online services are available such as:
– Sapienza registration number;
– Sapienza e-mail and wifi access;
– Sapienza student card for accessing to cafeterias and libraries.
See also the Sapienza student website here for more information.
For getting uniroma1 e-mail, follow these instructions (in English), summarized below:
1. LMAST4MC students who don’t have Sapienza as administrative office (but have Univaq), can access the following Uniroma1 services: Students card, Webmail student.uniroma1.it, Wifi access
2. Procedures:
> If you aren’t registered, please register in Infostud
> Login with your matriculation number and password
> Click on Profile
> Click on Exemptions
> Click on the option Inter- University Students
3. You can then access the Uniroma1 Google account by accepting the terms and conditions. The Sapienza email address for each student is surname.studentIDnumber@studenti.uniroma1.it
Please note: the option is under the voice Exemptions for technical reasons. Being an inter-university student doesn’t grant any particular benefit.
